Backing up your website using cPanel

How to back up your website in CPanel

The idea of backing up your work is one of the oldest messages around, so much so that we may find ourselves immune to the idea. Backing up is one of those tasks that is so easy to leave until tomorrow, then tomorrow, then tomorrow… until disaster does strike and we lose hours of valuable and unrepeatable work!

Your website – which probably took you countless hours to perfect – is too important to lose. You probably already have a copy of it stored safely somewhere. But what about changes to the site as time goes on? Imagine the frustration when you change an aspect of your site, only to find that you need it back the way it was! Luckily there’s an easy way to backup your site on your very own computer, which you can easily copy onto another storage device for secure peace of mind.

Here’s how to create a backup of your entire site in CPanel:

  • Login to your cPanel.
  • Scroll down to the ‘Files’ area, then click ‘Site Backup & Restore’.
  • Select ‘Full cPanel Backup’.
  • Select the starting date from when you want to create a backup.
  • Select an archive type (.tar or .zip).
    • .tar is the Unix Tape Archive facility
    • .zip is the common Windows compression archive
  • Download and Save the file.

If you perform this backup before you make any changes to your website, you’ll have a record of every change you make – and every bit that works in your site, in case disaster strikes or a change you make doesn’t work the way you intended.
